Shimpei Sato’s Onitama joins Sheriff of Nottingham and the soon-to-be-released City of Gears in the Arcane Wonders Dice Tower Essentials line.
Onitama is described as an abstract strategy game for two players. Games play fast. Really fast. Like, under 10 minutes fast. Played on a 5x5 grid, you have four pawns and what amounts as a king in the center, sitting on a throne. Your goal is to move your king onto the other’s throne or to capture their king.
Five movement cards are dealt and these are the only movements for the entire game. Each player receives two, with the fifth card set to the side of the board. On your turn, you play one of your two cards and move one pawn or your king based on the movement allowed on the card. Then you discard your card not out of the game, but to your opponent’s side. The initial fifth card, becomes yours. When your opponent moves, they discard their card to your side. And so on. You are basically trading moves as you play.
Watching video of Onitama, it’s clear this is, in fact, as fast as advertised. It looks like a cool little game.
No release date was set with the announcement, but let’s pretend Onitama is coming out tomorrow. Just because that would be sort of fun, wouldn’t it?
